Big Miracle: Fact and Fiction

The Marine Mammal Center is pleased to present the first in its new monthy series Marine Science Sundays, held on the 2nd Sunday of the Month! These fun-filled days of family-friendly tours, classroom activities and more will be centered around a new theme each month.

In tandem with the release of the Hollywood blockbuster "Big Miracle", the story of three gray whales trapped under the ice in Alaska, this month's theme is Big Miracle: Fact and Faction! Come learn about the true story of the gray whale's fateful adventure and learn about what makes gray whales so unique from Marine Mammal Center staff that have worked closely with gray whales. Docent-led tours will take you around the hospital showcases some of the patients we are caring for and how our veterinarians are getting them better. Classroom presentations will feature interactive activities and multimedia showcasing the magnificent adaptations of gray whales, the true story of the gray whale rescue in Canada, and the role The Marine Mammal Center plays in rescuing whales in California!

Docent-led Tours at 11:00AM, 1:00PM and 3:00PM. Tours last approximately 1 hour.

      • Adults: $7
      • Seniors (65+) and Students (5-17) $5
      • Members (and 1 guest) $5 each
      • Kids under 4 are FREE

  • Classroom Presentations at 12:00PM and 2:00PM. Programs last approximately 1 hour. No online reservations available for the classroom presentations.
      • FREE FOR ALL VISITORS

  • Special Whale-Themed Prizes for some lucky class participants!

Docent Led Tour Details

Docents will guide participants around the Center's exhibits and viewing areas, provide insights into the work of the Center; and share knowledge and experience about its patients, people and purpose.

Space is limited so be sure to book early! Walk-ins are welcome though reservations are recommended. Book online to guarantee your place on the tour (a small eventbrite processing fee will be added to online reservations).

Please arrive at the Center 15 minutes before the tour to check-in and remember to bring a photo ID.

The Center is open daily 10:00AM - 5:00PM (*except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day). Docent-led Tours are best for kids 5 and up. General admission and self-guided visits are free, and donations are always welcome!
