Bike from San Francisco to Sausalito to Tiburon

One of the best parts of a trip to Sausalito is the combination of the proximity to San Francisco and the outdoor adventure accessibility of a variety of activities. One of the favorites in the Bay Area is cycling and the roads and bridges are generally very bike-friendly. For those who have never ridden across the Golden Gate Bridge, this ride offers a special treat that won’t be forgotten anytime soon!

This particular ride takes riders across the bridge from San Francisco and into Sausalito and Mill Valley, either of which make the perfect place to stop for lunch and a break on the other side of the Bay. Taking you through to Tiburon, you may then either retrace your steps and come back to the City across the bridge, or simply ride the ferry from Tiburon back over to the wharf.

Getting Out of San Francisco

From Fishermans Wharf, you will start out riding along Jefferson Street and head over to Aquatic Park. Following around the bend of the park, turn right at Van Ness Ave and left toward Laguna Street to go through Fort Mason Center. Following a quick right on Laguna St. and a slight left on Marina Blvd., you will soon find yourself along the famous Marina Green and get the chance to enjoy the view as you parallel the bay for a bit. Once you have passed through Crissy Field on Mason St., turn left onto Crissy Field Ave and then follow that to a left onto Lincoln Blvd. At the end of Lincoln Ave., stay to the right as the road becomes a bike path toward the Golden Gate Bridge. Bear left at the next fork in the path. One last right turn on the bike path will have you facing toward the famous Golden Gate Bridge and have you on your way to the North Bay!

Heading for Sausalito and Mill Valley

Once you are across the Golden Gate Bridge, follow the signage toward Alexander Ave. on the bike path. You will turn right off the main portion of the Golden Gate Bridge/101 and make a left. Follow th bike path and signage to a right, then another left. After passing Vista Point Rd. on your right, you will be headed toward Alexander Ave. Turn right at the intersection, and stay on Alexander for just over a mile until it becomes South St. South St. will in turn change over to Second St and soon you will see your right turn coming up onto Richardson St. You will notice at this point that you are emerging into Sausalito proper and this is a good time to decide if you are taking a lunch break in quaint Sausalito.

Follow Richardson and take a left onto Bridgeway and follow that until you are clearly leaving Sausalito central. Take a slight right onto Marinship and follow that until Harbor where you will make a slight left and rejoin Bridgeway (now also called the Mill Valley-Sausalito Path). From here you will be headed toward Mill Valley and eventually on to Tiburon.

The Final Leg

Once you are in Mill Valley on the Mill Valley-Sausalito Path, you will want to turn right once you reach East Blithedale Ave, which becomes Tiburon Blvd after a short time. Remain on Tiburon Blvd until you reach your destination at the ferry terminal which will ferry you back across the bay to Fishermans Wharf.
