The Golden Gate Bridge began delivering vehicle traffic onto the streets of Sausalito in April, 1937. Prior to this time, all automobiles entering the City of Sausalito arrived through the navigations of the Sausalito Ferry Service, or after time spent in driving the loop around the San Francisco Bay on early inferior roadways. The actual building time for the bridge was only four years; President Roosevelt announced the opening of this California suspension bridge through a telegraph keypad, live from the White House.

Fun Golden Gate Bridge Facts:

The famous Golden Gate Bridge is designed to withstand an 8.0 earthquake while packed in both directions with the weight of bumper to bumper traffic. The bridge will also withstand 90 mile-per-hour winds and tidal waves at the same time as the quake.

When the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, the Great American Depression was in progress. The Golden Gate Bridge has always been a pay-as-you-go toll road that offers reduced fares and free passages for people who are bicycling or walking across the bay.

Industrial hardhats were first created for the Golden Gate Bridge project. Eleven people died while working on the bridge construction project when the project safety nets failed. The Golden Gate Bridge project was a safe place to be a laborer during the unsafe 1930s.

The Bridge was originally painted in Dulux Company: ‘International Orange’ tones. Now, Sherwin Williams carries a special-mix shade of paint called: ‘Golden Gate Bridge International Orange’ for industrial projects and ‘Fireweed’ (code: SW6328) for homes.

The cement mixers that have rotating drums were first used on the 1930s Golden Gate Bridge project. This famous San Francisco suspension bridge holds a combined 389,000 cubic yards of concrete that was used above and below the chilly waterline of the bay.

Sausalito Tourist Information:

The Golden Gate Bridge spans 1.7 miles over the bay between San Francisco and the City of Sausalito. From most Sausalito vacation locations, it is possible to walk from the lodging location across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the San Francisco Fisherman’s Warf section of town in less than 90 minutes. After exploring the colorful San Francisco waterfront neighborhoods, it is easy to grab a ferryboat ride back to the City of Sausalito.

Travelers on foot are allowed to navigate over the Golden Gate Bridge during daylight hours. At the center of the bridge, people are standing about 220 feet above the boats that are sailing on the water below. Leashed dogs and bicycles are allowed on the bridge; however, the Golden Gate Bridge rules forbid people on roller skates, skateboards and scooter-boards from making the crossing. High fines are awarded for safety violations.

When people are visiting California in San Francisco neighborhoods, they often choose to spend time on the far side of the Golden Gate Bridge in the colorful City of Sausalito. Sausalito offers multiple art galleries, many small artisan stores and access to unusual cultural events and community activities. Sausalito offers budget-friendly overnight houseboat rentals, resort-quality dining opportunities and excitement in all directions.

For a perfect experience while walking on the Golden Gate Bridge, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for windy conditions and friendly conversations. Many people use the walkway on the bridge as a daily exercise track for a 3.4 mile roundtrip jaunt. There are snack shops handy at both ends of the bridge and helpful resting spots along the way. Free and paid guided walking tours are available for the Golden Gate Bridge; the bicycle rental establishments at both ends of the bridge often interact for one way traveler ease.
