Sausalito, California

Sausalito, a premier destination for visitors to San Francisco and the Bay Area, is located at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge in California. It was named by 18th century Spanish explorers for the little willows (saucelitos) which were found on the banks of its streams. The city has a total area of 2.2 square miles and is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Sausalito was developed as a shipbuilding center in World War II, however, its industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as an artistic enclave, as a picturesque residential community, and as a tourist destination.

As of 2000, Sausalito has an estimated population of 7,330. According to the United States Census Bureau, the racial makeup of the city was 91.65% White, 0.65% African American, 0.29% Native American, 4.17% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.33% of the population.

Sausalito is easily accessible by car or bus over the Golden Gate Bridge or by ferry from San Francisco. Notable locations in the city include South Pier, Sausalito Cruising Club, Sausalito City Hall and Sausalito Public Library. There are also many well groomed hiking and biking trails in the city.
