Sausalito art galleries are just a stone-throw away from the famous Otis Redding ‘Dock of the Bay’ location that inspired Otis Redding’s greatest hit. Otis was asked to perform at the legendary San Francisco Fillmore during August 1967. After his performance at the Monterey Pops Festival, 112 miles south of Sausalito, Otis Redding was in hot demand to perform before global audiences. While booked at the Fillmore in August of 1967, Otis was staying on a houseboat that was docked at Issaquah Dock within the Sausalito Waldo Point marine neighborhoods. ‘Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding is describing Sausalito.

Sausalito art galleries are made for all types of people to enjoy.

The City of Sausalito is accessed at the north end of the famous San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. For decades, Sausalito has been known as a desirable getaway location for artisans, artists and performers. Due to the isolated nature of this closely-knit bayside community, tourists visiting the colorful San Francisco sights often enjoy a relaxing day in this paradise location. The local Sausalito collection of quality art galleries and artisan-run boutique stores offer an array of unusual items that are unique tourist attractions.

For the best results in Sausalito, an overnight stay should be planned. While this bayside community is only about two-miles square, there are many attractions to see and scenic stopovers to make. Local Sausalito boutique hotels offer package deals and discounted lodging plans that often become the best overnight deals for relaxing hotels in the greater San Francisco area. Sausalito also offers unique overnight vacation homes for rent that are down tied onto the docks; houseboats are a large part of the local artisan lifestyle.

There are two distinct public-access sections of town that house art galleries and tourist attractions in Sausalito. Bridgeway Street runs nearby to the waterfront and north towards the houseboat communities along the bay. Slightly inland from Bridgeway Street is the olden-style Princess district that houses many of the smaller boutiques and art galleries. On Bridgeway Street it is possible to find: The Bay Area Discovery Museum, a 1.5 acre Bay Model 3-D hydraulic replica of San Francisco and recreational equipment rentals.

Sausalito art gallery options are plentiful and include:

Heath Ceramics: At Heath, it is possible for visitors to tour the old Heath ceramics factory while they are shopping for colorful handcrafted tiles, tableware and interior design works-of-art. The friendly people at Heath are willing to answer questions about the history of pottery in the Sausalito region of California.

Pinestreet Papery Inc. At the Pinestreet Papery, guests are treated to fanciful and elegant styles of wrapping papers, stationary selections, and gift ideas. This exciting stationary store was established in 1978 near the Golden Gate Bridge as a colorful tourist attraction. The Papery sticker gallery is quite noteworthy to Mrs. Grossman collectors.

Scrimshaw Gallery: Sausalito residents are often highly interested in historic and modern forms of marine art. At the Scrimshaw Gallery it is possible to explore changing collections of scrimshaw items, decorative knives, and bronze sculptures. The Scrimshaw Gallery offers unique gift items, interior design elements and special types of keepsakes.

In the Princess District of Sausalito, it is possible to the see the artwork of 80 artisans under one roof at the Something Anything boutique store. Nearby, there are flower vendors, jewelry displays, wine tasting establishments and elegant runway fashions. The City of Sausalito offers yearly outdoor artisan shows, tempting craftsperson classes and a large variety of excellent opportunities for professional artists to display their latest projects. The City of Sausalito is one of the best kept secrets for art lovers and waterfront fans to sample whenever a California vacation is planned for the San Francisco area.
