One of the easiest and most accessible activities when visiting Sausalito is a walk or bicycle ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. Seeing the marinas of Sausalito and the skyline of San Francisco from the bridge is one of the most memorable views of the Bay Area, and one you won’t soon forget, and the walk itself is a relatively mild and non-strenuous adventure that most are capable of completing.
Pedestrians are allowed on the East Sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge between the hours of 5:00am and 6:00pm daily and are encouraged to use the sidewalk and see the sights. Open 365 days a year to both cyclists and pedestrians, the bridge does prohibit the use of skateboards, rollerblades, and other forms of transportation.
The Route itself is relatively mild at 1.7 miles each direction. The walk is obviously flat and paved, and wheelchairs are allowed throughout the bridge crossing. Be sure that you are dressed in appropriate shoes and dress with layers on as well as the wind and temperature on the bridge can be vastly different than in Sausalito although it is a scant few miles away.
Bikes on the Bridge
Because the Golden Gate Bridge is used as a commute route, cyclists have access to the bridge sidewalks 24 hours a day 365 days of the year and are able to make the crossing regardless of traffic or weather conditions. Electric bicycles are allowed on the sidewalks, but must be pedaled rather than run under power and cyclists on all types of bikes are cautioned to be mindful of and yield to pedestrians. Take a look at any of the bike rental merchants in Sausalito and get outfitted for a ride while you are visiting.
Education and Shopping at the Golden Gate Bridge
Visitors to the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time (and many area residents who may have never walked across the bridge) will find a gift shop, garden, and historical exhibits on the southeast side of the bridge. Just opposite Sausalito, on the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate, there are educational exhibits and historical information about the bridge’s construction and interesting facts about the area. There is also a souvenir and gift shop located in this small plaza that is the perfect place to purchase a souvenir for loved ones back home or a remembrance of your day on the historic bridge.
